Last week in drawing class we had an installation to draw from. The assignment was only contour lines. when we had finished the homework was to blacken in either the objects or the background. since I am such a messy artist I chose the background to hide some of restarts. It was only after I had finished did I realize how that affected the line quality of the drawing. I had lost some of the drawn line by filling in almost in a subtractive way. I went back into the drawing with white chalk and went over the objects themselves.
So in retrospect, which is after all how we all learn, my question is:
Would the outcome have been different had I known the background would end up black?
Would I have taken that fact into consideration and drawn the lines in a more subtractive way?
I am not sure.
On a side note: The overall composition was said to have been better had a pulled back in my view and shown more objects. Which leads me to the next question:
Would the composition been better vertically? I really wanted the cross shape at the top to be about the size it is and to include the grate thing in the bottom. Had I made it vertical I might have had fewer objects.
Oh well, live and learn.
